April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month—a critical time to reflect on the split-second decisions that can change lives forever. At AAA Freight, safety is our top priority, and we are committed to raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, especially within the trucking industry.
In 2022, distracted driving claimed 3,308 lives and injured an estimated 289,310 individuals across the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
These numbers are not just statistics—they represent real people whose lives were cut short or forever altered due to preventable incidents.
For commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers, the stakes are even higher. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports that CMV drivers who text while driving are 23.2 times more likely to be involved in a safety-critical event, such as a crash or near-crash, compared to those who do not. Even dialing a phone increases the risk sixfold.
Distracted driving encompasses more than just texting. It includes:
- Visual distractions: Taking your eyes off the road
- Manual distractions: Taking your hands off the wheel
- Cognitive distractions: Taking your mind off driving
Texting is particularly dangerous because it involves all three types of distractions. Reading or sending a text takes your eyes off the road for approximately five seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of a football field blindfolded.
In the trucking industry, distracted driving doesn't just endanger the driver, it poses significant risks to everyone on the road. Large trucks have longer stopping distances and reduced maneuverability, making any lapse in attention potentially catastrophic.
Moreover, the legal and financial repercussions for trucking companies can be severe. Violations related to distracted driving can lead to substantial fines, increased insurance premiums, and damage to the company's reputation.
